Madagascar Soul & Soil Revival: A Partnership for Change

ImpactHope is excited to introduce the Madagascar Soul & Soil Revival Project, a groundbreaking initiative in partnership with Foundations for Farming (FfF). This project is dedicated to transforming Madagascar’s agricultural landscape by equipping local farmers with sustainable farming techniques that not only ensure food security but also empower communities. With the support of Madagascar’s government and the commitment of passionate trainers, the project aims to train 1 million farmers, helping them escape the cycle of hunger and poverty. Through hands-on learning and community involvement, ImpactHope is playing a vital role in revitalizing both the soil and the spirit of Madagascar.

A Hub of Learning: The Demonstration Field

The heart of the training program is the demonstration field, where local leaders host weekly sessions. Each week, at least 35 trainees are guided through practical farming techniques, with the number of participants steadily increasing. After a successful conference in Antananarivo, 66 individuals have registered for the upcoming training, eager to learn and contribute to their communities.

  • Trainees as Future Leaders: Recent training sessions, such as the one held from August 12 to 16, 2024, are shaping the future of Madagascar’s agricultural landscape. Trainees are selected for their potential to lead, with the goal of them becoming trainers who will extend their knowledge to others. For example, a session from February 26 to March 1, 2024, involved church-selected leaders who are now poised to disseminate these essential farming practices.
The Pfumvudza method involves following a series of precise steps at the right time to ensure a good harvest. The first stage of preparing the land is called "eating an elephant." This stage involves weeding little by little until the entire plot is weeded.

  • Hands-On Learning – Composting and Vegetable Production: The program emphasizes practical learning, ensuring that participants can apply their knowledge directly in the field. Trainees engage in activities such as composting, a critical technique for maintaining soil fertility. Photos from the sessions, including one from February 6 to March 1, 2024, show trainees building compost piles under the guidance of experienced trainers. Additionally, the Pfumvudza method, a precise approach to vegetable production, is taught to ensure successful harvests and improve food security.
  • Collaborative Efforts for Broader Impact: ImpactHope’s involvement extends beyond training, as the organization works with various community leaders, including members of parliament. For instance, on February 21, 2024, trainees from the second arrondissement of Antananarivo participated in compost-making activities. This collaboration ensures that training is accessible to all, particularly marginalized groups, and that sustainable farming practices are spread throughout the region.
  • Balanced Learning – Theoretical and Practical Approaches: Every training session combines theoretical instruction with practical application. A session held on August 16, 2024, featured classroom-based learning, equipping participants with the knowledge they need before moving on to hands-on work in the fields. This comprehensive approach ensures that trainees leave fully prepared to implement sustainable agriculture techniques.
At each training session, they are presented with the bad consequences of plowed and bare soil.
Each week of training, there is a theoretical part in a training room like this one.
Each week, at least 35 people are trained.
