Location & History
Education in Huehuetenango, like in many rural areas of Guatemala, is limited.
Many schools in the region lack basic resources, and many children, particularly indigenous children, do not have access to education. The literacy rate in Huehuetenango is lower than the national average, and many children drop out of school early. There have been efforts to improve education in Huehuetenango, including programs to build new schools, improve teacher training, and increase access to education for indigenous children. However, these efforts have had limited success, and much work still needs to be done to improve education in the region.
Thirty years ago, the education system in the remote areas near Huehuetenango, Guatemala, was not sound. Children would graduate from elementary school (grade 6) and then be forced to make a difficult choice: to commute hours away (i.e., walking) or move and live in a different city to attend secondary school. Sadly, many children stayed home, quit school, and found low-paying jobs. Without education, there was little hope of improving their situations and life.
Special Fundraiser – Gift a Bible
The Filadelfia School in Chajul Quiché continues to struggle with teachers’ salaries. Chajul is one of the poorest areas in Guatemala, with few sources of income for parents to pay tuition fees and enroll their children in school.
Thanks to your unwavering commitment to education, we have successfully raised the funds required to sponsor ten teachers for the upcoming school year. We are still in need of $2,500 to provide 300 Bibles to our students. These Bibles will not only nourish their spiritual growth but also serve as a beacon of hope in an area facing economic challenges.
Who Are We Partnering With?
ImpactHope has partnered with Gilberto and Ruth Noriega to impact the quality of education and increase access to education for indigenous children. We have worked with our partners to support over 28 schools that have been started by Christian churches that desire to impact their communities and provide an avenue for parents to give their children a high-level education. This will ultimately provide the knowledge and skills to the new generation to escape the cycle of poverty. ImpactHope has been involved in 14 of the 28 schools, which are now fully sustainable.
What Is The Initiative?
Churches that desire to impact their communities provide the avenues for these schools to exist and equip children in the community to receive a proficient education, ultimately providing the knowledge and skills to escape the cycle of poverty. Many Guatemalan families make substantial financial sacrifices for their children hoping to escape poverty. Education provides them with that hope!
The goal is simple: assist the next generation in escaping the cycle of poverty through quality Christian education.
